Toenail Fungus

Toenail Fungus infections can be unsightly and embarrassing – the infected nail becomes yellow, thick and hard to cut. Although toenail fungus infections are also very common, they can be very difficult to treat. Until recently, the most common treatments for toenail fungus were taking pills that might cause liver toxicity or using topical medications that may have a low success rate. But several years of research and advancements in technology provided a safer solution: laser treatment (see also Keryflex section). This safe, quick and painless laser treatment has proven to be a very effective treatment for toenail fungus infection.

How does the Laser work?

The laser light wave is at a frequency that is able to destroy the fungal microbes without hurting your healthy tissue. The laser light causes a temporary increase in clear nails and passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin.

How quickly will the laser cure my fungus?

At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear, it takes time to grow out. The fungal infection will only clear as fast as your nails grow out. Even though the laser may have killed the fungal cells the fungus will still cause the old nail to be thick and discolored. To get rid of the thick and discolored nails the new nail will have to grow in and the old affected nail will need to be trimmed off. Generally a fully affected nail will take 9 to 12 months to grow out completely. However, there will likely be improvement to the appearance of the nail earlier on depending on the severity of the infection.

Is there anyone who should not get laser treatments?

Those with loss of sensation should not have laser treatment because the laser because the patient needs to know when the laser becomes too warm. Also patients with poor circulation should not receive this treatment.

How long is the treatment?

It takes about 15 minutes to have one treatment completed in our office.

Is the procedure painful?

Most people feel no pain. Some people feel a warming sensation.

How many treatments do I need to have?

We suggest three laser treatments, each spaced a month apart. 3 treatments in conjunction with at home care for most cases will be enough to cure the fungal nails.

With a 95% rate of effectiveness*, this treatment works because it is able to target beneath the surface of your nail, and deep into your nail bed, to attack the problem at its source. This treatment does penetrate, and it does so in a way that is both perfectly safe and highly effective. In most instances only one treatment is necessary.

What can I do at home to help treatment be more effective?

Be sure you spray out your shoes with Fortinia Shoe Shield to disinfect any fungal cells.

File down the top of nails to decrease the thickness of the nail. Thinner nails make it easier for the laser and topical treatment to kill the fungus.

Apply Fortinia topical antifungal solution once daily after the shower on the nail. This and the Fortinia Shoe Shield can be purchased in our salon.
